What is issue between Ukraine and Russia relation?
Russia-Ukraine conflict: Past,
Present and future
The source of the Russia-Ukraine conflict had to go back in history. In July 2021, President Putin write an article in which highlights the close historical and cultural connections between the Russians and Ukrainians. Two days back, he front that Ukraine has never been an independent country and was been historically part of Russia.
The triggering conflict between the Russia and Ukraine was not anticipated the way it has progress . After some days when Russia esteemed the breakaway republics of the Donetsk and Luhansk, it was clear that Moscow was going to take matters head-on, but no one look for it to go for an all-out war opposed Ukraine. The dissidents control barely one-third of the territory of the two regions, while the Ukrainian forces control two-thirds. Hence the disputable point where Russia would be try to take the territory controlled by the Ukrainian forces hence, no one would have expected that Russian President Vladimir Putin would take such a big action.
Russia was repelling to the increase of NATO, a Cold War-era grouping, to include the former Communist countries of Central and Eastern Europe, especially former Soviet space. In 1997 and 2004, NATO elaborated to involve the former Communist countries despite Russian objections.
ROOTS OF THE RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT
In 2005, Putin shoe the Soviet dissolution as the “greatest catastrophe of the 20th century”. Since then, he was trying to bring the former Soviet states into the Russian-sponsored Eurasian Economic Community. Ukraine is the second-most populous country, lying between the Russia and Europe, and the place of source of the Russian Civilisation holds special importance. In 2010, the pro-Russian Yanukovych regained the presidency and in 2013 stopped negotiations for an therelation accord with the EU, which led to extensive protests. In February 2014, he fled Ukraine. It inflamed Putin so much that he strongly invaded and occupied the Ukrainian region of Crimea, where Sevastopol, the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea Fleet, is situated.
WHAT DOES PUTIN WANT?
It is not clear what Putin wants to achieve by conquering military. He stated that objective is the safety of the Russian-speaking population of Donetsk and Luhansk, part of which had been under the control of the Russian-backed separatists. Putin announce that he wants to disband Ukraine. But the method Russian forces acted on launching air, water, and missile attacks against some Ukrainian cities, it seems that Putin wants to weak and neutralise Ukraine to the area that it can never show a security threat to Russia in the future. He was also wanted that US and NATO to take Russian objections and concerns seriously.
Russia had an economic super-power China on its side. Europe bring more than 40 per cent of its gas and oil from Russia, which is the beneficial for the Moscow too. Hence, many countries in Europe, including Germany were not much ambition on very severe sanctions. As of now, Europe seems united against unprovoked Russian aggression, but for how long?
PRESSURE ON THE INDIA AMID RUSSIA-UKRAINE CONFLICT
India has been under immense pressure because of the conflict. The conflict may lead to the dramatic rise in international crude oil prices, putting a serious charge on the country’s economy. In view of its very special chain with the Moscow, New Delhi has not criticized Russian actions. They want a peaceful resolution of the conflict, taking into the consideration the legitimate security interest of all the parties to the conflict. Ukraine’s interest is its sovereignty and territorial integrity, while the Russia wants Ukraine and other post-Soviet states should be increase to join NATO. It will undermine Ukraine’s freedom of choice, but perhaps it guarantees us about core security interest.
